Purpose

Many terms exist for describing particular kinds of work teams: self-directed, project teams, problem solving teams, process management teams, cross functional teams to name a few. All of these teams can be described as high involvement teams. High involvement teams are empowered to improve quality and productivity through participation in an environment that seeks to push power, information, knowledge and rewards down in the organizational hierarchy.   
                                  
One of the early steps to becoming an effective high involvement team is to understand how the communication styles of team players impact the dynamics of teams. The purpose of our session is to do just that and then to explore creative ways of positively utilizing the strengths of team player styles to move the team forward to accomplish its goal(s) and ultimately the mission of the organization.

About the Experience

“What Makes an Effective Team Player” explores how teams in any organization can successfully meet a crucial challenge getting the job done despite individual differences. All of us when given the opportunity to participate on a team bring along a variety of strengths and weaknesses that come together to form our communication style as a team player. A variety of structured activities and learning techniques requiring your participation will be utilized: large and small group discussions/work; lecturette, self-assessment instrument (Parker Team Player Survey), shared experiences, video, pre-work assignments, individual in-class assignments.

“What Makes an Effective Team Player” aims to improve individual team player effectiveness and correspondingly team effectiveness through:

  • Identifying four distinct team-player styles that guide how team members approach a task and relate to each other,
  • Identifying individual team player communication styles and corresponding strengths and weaknesses,
  • Recognize how each team-player style contributes to a team and can potentially hinder a team,
  • Identify five strategies for becoming a better team player and for maximizing the team’s effectiveness,
  • Identify key personal and organizational benefits of becoming better team players and team leaders.
